March 13, 2020
Dear Church Family,
I apologize for the delay in writing this letter. I have been in prayer all week as well as in conversation with our conference, the Whatcom Health Department, and other local churches. I did not want to disappoint any of you as I know many of you look forward to seeing each other in worship each Sunday. On the other hand, I don’t want to risk so much as one of your lives with this virus. Needless to say, this has been a difficult decision.
Our Pacific Northwest Conference has advised us to consider holding church online at least through the end of March and has provided technological support for us to do that. Both the Bellingham and Ferndale Church are doing this through different mediums.
The Whatcom County Health Department is now making the following recommendations:
People at higher risk of severe illness should stay home and away from large groups of people as much as possible, including public places with lots of people and large gatherings where there will be close contact with others. This includes concert venues, conventions, sporting events, and crowded social gatherings. People at higher risk include people:
1. Over 60 years of age.
2. With underlying health conditions including heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes.
3. With weakened immune systems.
4. Who are pregnant.
The community should cancel or postpone non-essential large public gatherings. If you can feasibly avoid bringing large groups of people together, we recommend postponing or canceling events and gatherings. We are loosely defining large gatherings as 10-50 people or more.
I know St. Anne’s, Christian Fellowship, and the Mormons will not be meeting this week. I couldn’t get a hold of the rest of the churches. I did see Pastor Aaron’s letter from the Lutheran church and he’s recommending his older folks stay home and everyone else sit a good distance apart.
Here is what led me to my decision. My children were at church on Sunday. No one had any symptoms of anything. The last time someone was sick in our house was three weeks ago when George was sick (Fever, headache, sore throat, coughing.) We had teased George about having the Coronavirus because he had come home from Tacoma sick, but he refused to go to the doctor and after two weeks he got better, mostly. On Monday, Joel started coughing, by Tuesday he had a headache, and last night he was running a 103-degree temp. He’s homeschooled, only exposed to church and his siblings. We’ve missed karate for a couple of weeks. Three-week incubation period?
What is it? We don’t know. But what was a laughing matter three weeks ago, suddenly isn’t funny anymore. I love each and every one of you dearly. I would be devastated if one of the children or myself (who visits nursing homes and sick people in their homes) brought some virus to you that caused your death. The coronavirus kills more people than the flu. We know how the flu spreads. We have vaccinations and some “treatments.” This coronavirus is all new. We are unsure how long it lives in the air or on surfaces; we do not have a vaccine or treatment. The Kirkland Life Care Center said patients went from being ok to dead in five hours. Keep in mind they had underlying medical problems, but that is still scary. Three weeks ago, when we laughed, bumping elbows and feet, the virus was in WA and CA. Now, it is in almost every state in the nation. Things aren’t so funny.
So, let us take some precautions even if they feel silly. Let’s do church online or by telephone at least through the end of March. I want everyone to participate. Don’t go fishing or go shopping. That defeats the point. Join us either on the computer or by phone:

I know for many of you this may feel like over reacting, I’m ok with that. If it means so much as one life is saved, then I will have been glad to have made this decision. Jesus has commanded us to love our neighbor as yourself and this is part of that. We don’t put our neighbor in danger. As your pastor, I am happy to meet with you in small groups or have one on ones with you. My phone number is 360-595-4821. I am here to listen to everything from “I’m afraid” to “this is so stupid.” I can pray with you too. I can also set up meetings on the computer if you want to “see” me but not risk getting the children’s sickness.
We are the church, whether we meet in your home, over the phone, or on the computer. We are the church when we drop off food on the sick neighbor’s doorstep. We are the church, when we share our 48 bundle of toilet paper with the neighborhood block. We are the church when we cancel services to keep the number of those infected low. It is not about being in this building, it’s about following Jesus. Go be a Christian.
Who Knew We’d Give up Church for Lent?!
God is Funny, All the Time 😉

A Word from Our Moderator:
Dear Friends,
Through much thought and prayer I have made the decision not to attend church until there is a clear direction from the Whatcom Public Health Dept. I have been feeling particularly vulnerable this last week as I have been updating myself on the COVID19 virus. When Pastor Sandy contacted me re: not having worship service, I had already determined that I couldn't risk being there.

I will appreciate the ZOOM service and any prayers that we can share during the hour on Sunday. Ann and I have already worked on it with my computer. Yes, it isn't quite the same as meeting with our family and getting "real" hugs as we pass the peace. That day will come again soon, but meanwhile, I truly love all of you and want long time relationships with you in this place and community.

Blessings and Peace Rev Kathleen
